MISSION

This site exists as a place to connect (and reconnect), learn (and relearn), and ultimately explore the diverse dimensions of the Afro-Latin diaspora. Grappling with the intricacies of race and ethnicity, Voz Afro seeks to capture the depths of cultural phenomena that contribute to a uniquely Afro-Latin experience. Art, music, popular culture, spirituality, and social movements are all threads of expression that form a continuously intertwined and diverse Afro-Latin cultural experience. From the entanglements of historical enslavement and social barriers, this site aims to be a restorative space to reclaim and reaffirm the identity of Afro-Latines from the oppressive shroud of marginalization to instead uplift and highlight.

By no means are the contents of this site a definitive or conclusive statement; it is impossible to capture the nuances of Afro-Latin identity or to define the entirety of a diaspora that is ever-shifting and continuously growing. This website takes an approach that centers itself in the context of the United States as the stage for the emerging consciousness of a larger Afro-Latinx identity. Various expressions of Afrolatinidad globally have created a mosaic of afrolatinidades that compliment and are responsive to the diverse locales that they manifest in. However, this site hopes to capture small pieces of a larger whole and to provide information (and potentially inspiration) for those seeking to explore
