FOR OUR LIVES

Cultural and Political Movements

Translating the "Black Lives Matter" narrative from the United States to Latin American contexts (re)introduces complex histories of systemic racism, oppression, and exclusion for Afro-Latinos.

When carrying the combined identity of being both Black and Latinx in the United States, it is difficult at times to reconcile parts of non-Black Latinx communities that may not support the Black Lives Matter movement and as a result further alienate Afro-Latinxs.

The Miami Herald reported conflict between Black and non-Black Latinxs in response to Black Lives Mater events planned demonstrations for the killing of unarmed Black man George Floyd by law enforcement. Events such as these have caused divisions in Miami's Cuban American population as the experiences of Black and non-Black Latinxs continue to echo gaps in understanding and a connected experience.
